@mike prosody or ejabberd

prosody for small, ejabberd for big

remember to set up the XEPs for a good experience

@espectalll if you're implying matrix, I think @mike would need a whole new rack for that

@calvin @mike Yeah, definitely consumes more than XMPP for now and thus is harder to self-host... but XMPP is messed up regardless, putting design choices aside it's broken up in too many standards and it's hard to find servers which implement even the most important extensions

@espectalll @calvin @mike >but XMPP is messed up regardless, putting design choices aside it's broken up in too many standards

I agree
>it's hard to find servers which implement even the most important extensions
That's why you setup your own server

@sathariel @calvin @mike You can't ask #normie people (even among sysadmins and devs) to set up their own servers, otherwise it will never catch up lol

@sathariel @calvin @mike You need enough people to make it worthwhile using

at the very least you'll need #normie devs

@espectalll @calvin @mike again I agree, but tbh I setup my server just to talk with some nerd folks. It would be great the rest of people use a decentralized service, and it would be even better if it wasn't XMPP.

@sathariel @calvin @mike yeah, that's what Matrix is for

but right now I don't know of any Matrix server that doesn't feel like Mastodon lol

@sathariel @calvin @mike Probably your best choice would be Weechat + something like QWeeChat?

Here's the Matrix extension for Weechat: github.com/torhve/weechat-matr

@sathariel @calvin @mike here's a screenshot of QWeeChat in all its meme dev not setting up a good theme glory btw

@mike I use Prosody, it's very lightweight and easy to configure

@mike the United States postal service has never failed me

@mike #Prosody is the !xmpp server I've always used, but I've also heard ejabberd is good.
@mike @lnxw48a1 prosody is Good. It even has a built in thing for copying over certs with the right permissions
