@clacke pretty much, they resembled Microsoft's office politics but without the ruthless C-levels at the top keeping money rolling in despite it.

The Japanese side went all in on the Saturn while the western side tried to push the 32X, they ended up dividing their efforts on both, and Sony basically wiped them out after that.
